Louise Bugg Retires from MeLCat
Louise Bugg to Retire from MLC in December
Louise Bugg, MeLCat Project Coordinator since its inception, will retire at the end of this year. In a very real sense, Louise has been the mother of MeLCat. She nurtured the project at the beginning by serving on the committee that chose the INN-Reach software and by helping to negotiate the contract with Innovative Interfaces. As MeLCat began to grow, she developed the policies that disciplined and shaped the service. And finally she helped push it out of the nest by training users and teaching others how to make best use of the software. It is because of Louise’s involvement and hard work that MeLCat is the success that it is today.
MeLCat is not Louise’s first experience with teaching librarians how to improve resource sharing. In 1978, Louise was one of MLC’s first OCLC trainers, and she taught many Michigan librarians how to use the brand new OCLC ILL system. She continued part-time with MLC until 1980, when MLC moved from Detroit to Lansing.
Louise started her library career in 1968 after receiving her library degree from the University of Michigan. Prior to working for MLC, she was at Oakland University, where she worked first as cataloger and then as Head of Cataloging. In 1974, she moved to Wayne State University and served as Head of Original Cataloging until 1977. In 1978, she joined MLC, which was then housed at Wayne State University.
From 1980 until 2003, Louise worked at Wayne State University in Technical Services/Systems/DALNET. In 2003, Louise returned to her early roots when she accepted the position of MeLCat Project Coordinator at MLC.
Louise is the proud grandmother of two new grandchildren and, with her husband Jim who retired three years ago, she will find plenty to do to keep herself busy! MLC wishes Louise well in her retirement, and we extend our thanks to her for the vital role she played in implementation of MeLCat.
